Youth Justice Philosophy and Case Process Training

This training builds foundational knowledge of the philosophy and values of Wisconsin’s Youth Justice System, case flow, legislative purpose and standards, youth and family experiences, impact of racial and ethnic disparity, and use of strength-based and evidence-based practices. It helps new professionals learn the “why” behind youth justice duties and sets the stage for Basic Intake, YASI, and other training.

This is a 1-day VILT training held via Zoom.
See PDS Online for course description, learning objectives and pre-work.

“I love that this training empowers us to challenge the status quo, encourages us to think Families First, and to see our youth as young people...”

Registration for the Training

There are two different ways to become registered for Youth Justice Philosophy and Case Process (YJPCP) training.

Automatic Enrollment by WCWPDS

PDS will automatically enroll some new professionals into a session of YJPCP in tandem with Basic Intake enrollments.

All new Youth Justice professionals who are enrolled into Basic Intake Worker Training after 1/1/25 will also be assigned to a YJPCP session.

This process will take about 2 weeks from completing or updating their PDS Online profile and indicating they have a YJ role and mark YES to the box that says “Register me for the next BI Training”.

Learners will be notified via email of enrollments into these two courses. They may withdraw from the assigned YJPCP session and may choose to self-register for a different session if they wish to complete the course.

New Youth Justice professionals who are not required to complete Basic Intake will not be auto-enrolled in either course.

Self-Registration via PDS Online

Most child welfare professionals employed by a county human services, tribal, or Milwaukee County youth justice agency are able to register themselves for a session via PDS Online.

This course is highly recommended for those who have responsibility for providing juvenile court intake or assessment, dispositional and ongoing case management services as their primary or secondary role and are new to these duties.
This training is especially relevant for:

  • New Youth Justice professionals who are not required to complete Basic Intake
  • Child Welfare professionals (like CPS or FCC) with multiple roles including YJ responsibilities (hired prior to 1/1/25)
  • Recently hired Youth Justice professionals (prior to 1/1/25)
  • Experienced professionals who transfer to Youth Justice roles
  • Supervisors who want to learn this course to prepare and support new staff
  • Experienced professionals who coach or mentor new Youth Justice professionals

"This training helped me understand the importance of our ‘why.’"
